Where are you from, and what are you studying and at which institution?
I'm from China, and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Adelaide University.
I first came to Adelaide in 2019 for my sister’s graduation, and I was amazed by Adelaide and the university. I then decided I wanted to study in Adelaide for high school. I arrived in 2022 to start high school at Eynesbury College. I wanted to learn more about phone chips as I believed that’s the future, so I decided to study Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
In my degree, I am not just designing the circuits; I am thinking about how I can reduce people’s cost of living, produce better batteries, and make renewable energy accessible for everyone by simplifying circuits or reducing energy loss.
How did you feel supported as an international student when you arrived in Adelaide?
At first, my sister and college teachers helped a lot. They spent their free time showing me around Adelaide, hiking and playing sports on the weekend. I then joined StudyAdelaide events held for the international student community.
I am also more connected to the local community by volunteering at the South Australian State Emergency Service (SASES).
Adelaide is the perfect place to grow, it’s a city that feels calm yet full of possibilities, where you can build confidence, independence and lifelong friendships.
What’s been your favourite experience while living and studying in Adelaide?
Some of my favourite experiences are studying, attending leadership meetings and career sessions.
I enjoy spending my weekend, training, hiking or just grabbing a book in a quiet local café. I like to take slow walks around Adelaide to listen and feel the history behind the buildings.
I have also enjoyed being a student leader at the university. I find it cool that I am not just a student, but can share student concerns and expectations with the university. When I see something has changed because of my contribution, I genuinely feel very happy and find it rewarding.
